| BOO TO THE FLU HEALTH FAIR |
MO-KAN was represented at the Visiting Nurse's Association's Boo to the Flu Health Fair on October 13, 2010. The teams that participated greeted all recipients of the flu shot when they came for a snack and a visit to the booths that were provided.
We had a great time....well, I don't think any of the dogs really enjoyed the KC Wolf, but the witch in her long black dress, large black hat, green face and cackling voice did not bother them however. Great to be a part of the fair.
Thanks to the following teams who participated:
Shirley May and CyAn Sue Manning and Lily Karen Manley and Maggie May Jayne Frye and Dandy Carol Wells and Jonah Joyce Maas and Casey Cathy Leschena and Josie

KC Hospice hosted Camp Carousel on September 24 & 25, 2010. This was a "family" camp for kids who have had a significant loss and their parents/guardians attended as well.
KC Hospice asked for an increase in pet assisted activity and Kathy Fetters contacted Sue Manning for volunteers.
A request was sent out to seek teams who are interested. As usual, our membership stepped up to the plate and offered to help however they could.

Awesome! The annual meeting was a great success. We had record attendance, voted in three new officers for the Board, approved the new constitution (which Delta has asked permission to use as an example for other affiliates), and had a very prestigious speaker, Dr. Rebecca Johnson from MU.
The Board of Directors for 2010/2011 is Sue Manning, President, Jayne Frye, Vice President, Joyce Maas, Corresponding Secretary, Margaret Bathke, Treasurer, and Cathy Leschena as Recording Secretary.
Dr. Johnson is the Director of the Research Center for Human-Animal Interaction or ReCHAI. The acronym is pronounced Reach High! That is what her research is doing in the growing field of how the human-animal bond impacts health in people and animals. Her presentation was titled “Benefits of Animal Assisted Activity: A Triple Win.”
Dr. Johnson brought along a colleague who is working with her this summer. He is a Veterinarian and University Professor from Turkey. His name is Dr. Turel Ozkul. He is in the process of starting a Pet Partner’s group and would like our assistance and guidance in establishing a program such as ours. We would be like a “sister” affiliate. Funny how many offers I have had from members to travel to Turkey to assist him!
Dr. Johnson has also asked if we will meet with her, after her return from Sweden, to discuss how our group can assist her in her ongoing research. That would be a wonderful opportunity and hopefully we can find our place in her world.
This year has been very successful in the area of Pet Partner training. We have taught the class to all but 11 of our current members. We have two more classes this year and hope to add a couple more “veteran members” to that number.
Due to the classes, we have also added four more evaluations which will be two each quarter. Be sure to check your renewal date on your badge and be ahead of the game…the spots go quickly so send your check and evaluation form before the last minute. It will difficult to impossible to be scheduled at the last minute.
We also honored the “founding mothers” with a gift for all their hard work, blood sweat and tears, to get our group to this point in history. Joyce Maas and Merrily Shultz have been on the board since the beginning nine years ago. Shirley May has been the R.E.A.D. coordinator and Carol Wells has been an invaluable asset in so many ways. We also remembered Joan Kemp who was also on the board from the beginning.

ABOUT THE MOYER FOUNDATION
Our mission: helping children in distress
The mission of The Moyer Foundation is to offer encouragement, comfort and support to children enduring a time of profound emotional, physical or financial distress and provide opportunities for enhancing overall wellness, stability and quality of life.
The Moyer Foundation, headquartered in Seattle, WA, is a public, 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization founded in 2000 by MLB, World Series-winning All-Star pitcher Jamie Moyer and his wife, Karen.
Through the generosity of a giving community, The Moyer Foundation supports programs that directly serve critical needs of children in severe distress. Since its inception, The Moyer Foundation has raised over $20 million to help support more than 225 different programs that help children in distress in a variety of ways. In addition to helping children in Washington State, The Moyer Foundation created and funds Camp Erin, the largest network of bereavement camps in the country for children and teens who are grieving a significant loss; Camp Mariposa, for children affected by addiction in their families; and community partnerships to help raise awareness and support initiatives that share in the mission of helping children in distress.
KC Hospice contacted MO-KAN for volunteers to work at their first Camp Erin. We were overwhelmed with support from our membership. The camp was held on June 25, 26, & 27 2010. The following members attended and all have stated they would volunteer again in a heart beat.
Candy Anderson and Jake Laurie Barksdale and Boomer Amy Bennett and Ginger Tracy Brenner and Jake Paul Decker and Boris Julie Goodman and Onyx Dee Karleskint and Toby Tracy Kroll and Moses Brian Kroll and Merit Patty Levine and Cheri Lisa McCormick and Kona Sue Manning and Lily Merrily Shultz and Fame Kathy Waller and Maxine Margaret Wilson and Smokey Joe Amy Wurst and Sake
Tracy Brenner and Jake participated in a Meet & Greet the week before the camp. The Meet & Greet was an picnic event where the children and parents could get acquainted with the counselers before the camp began. Thanks to Tracy and Jake who spent 3 hours in the hot evening heat to socialize with the families.
Thank you to all the teams who participated in this worthwhile event.
