Over the past few years, the increasing use of raw protein diets and the health concerns and controversy generated have grown, not only between the public and veterinarians, but often within the veterinary profession itself.
After careful consideration of all of the known scientific facts, and on the unanimous advice of the Delta Society Medical Advisory Board, made up of internal medicine and public health experts from North America, the board of directors voted to preclude animals eating raw protein foods from participating in the Delta Society Pet Partners program. This will be a phased program, with complete compliance structured to be in place by June 30, 2010.

The following is an excerpt from the February 2010 Delta Newsletter:
Q&A: Requesting an Extension
Question: I just realized that my registration expired at the end of December. I have the paperwork, but I haven’t had a chance to get my evaluation done, and was hoping I could get an extension so that I can continue my visits! Can you help me?” -Simon, OH
Answer: Thank you so much for checking about an extension. This is a common question we get as time goes by so quickly and individuals often forget when their renewal is coming up. Unfortunately, at this time, we only award extensions to teams with extenuating circumstances such as a natural disaster, medical or family crisis. Until you renew, your registration is on hold. You may not visit or represent yourself as a Pet Partner, however, you will not have to redo the home study course or “start over”. Teams have 12 months to renew their registration before needing to retake the home study and use the new registration packet.
In the future, please remember that you can renew up to 6 months before your registration expires. If you expire in December, you can renew in July and keep your December expiration date. Make it a habit to look at your badge every time you put it on so you are aware of your expiration date.

| A Testimony to the 'Healing Powers' of Two Pet Partners Teams

"I was feeling so sad when the lady that owns Kip ( a medium black dog) came into Shawnee Mission detox center. I became addicted to pain pills after 2 spinal surgeries and was feeling so sorry for myself.
Kip and a German Shepherd absolutely made my day. Just to be able to touch, pet and be with the dogs was the best part of the whole experience. I came across the card tonight and even though it was in May, I still remember how much they cheered me up. Thank you and keep up the incredible work you do."
